AMEA Power, a renewable energy company based in the UAE, has won two large battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in South Africa.

The projects, named Gainfar and Boitekong, are each over 300 MW in capacity and located in the North West Province.

The contracts were awarded under South Africa’s Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (Bid Window 2), led by the Department of Electricity and Energy. The program aims to tackle frequent blackouts and load-shedding in the country.

The Gainfar project will connect to the Ngwedi substation, while Boitekong will link to the Marang substation.

Both projects will deliver power and other grid services to Eskom, the national electricity utility, under 15-year agreements.

Once operational, these systems will provide backup power, stabilize the grid, and support South Africa’s shift to renewable energy.

Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, called this achievement a key milestone for the company as it grows in South Africa.

He noted that these are AMEA Power’s first battery projects won through a competitive process.

Al Nowais reaffirmed the company’s commitment to offering sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions while supporting Eskom and South Africa’s energy transition.
