Eskom has announced an extension for upgrading prepaid electricity meters from the old Key Revision Number (KRN1) system to the newer KRN2 system.
The original deadline was set for November 24, 2024, when KRN1 meters would no longer accept new electricity tokens.
But with millions of meters still needing upgrades, Eskom and municipal utilities, including Johannesburg’s City Power, have extended the deadline to May 31, 2025.
The decision brings relief to many prepaid electricity users who could have faced disruptions in their power supply.
The move from KRN1 to KRN2 is important for improving the efficiency of prepaid electricity systems and tackling illegal electricity usage.
By the original deadline, around 1.9 million meters were still using KRN1, leaving many customers at risk of losing access to electricity.
The upgrade is aimed at ensuring all prepaid meters meet the latest technology standards, which include better security features to prevent fraud.
City Power has assured customers who haven’t upgraded their meters that they will not face immediate disconnection.
These users can still generate the key change tokens needed for the upgrade until the new May 2025 deadline. The extension gives customers who may have lost their tokens or haven’t yet updated their meters extra time to make the switch without worrying about losing access to electricity.
Despite this grace period, City Power has made it clear that meters still using KRN1 after the new deadline will no longer be able to load electricity units.
Customers with non-smart meters will not be able to buy electricity vouchers, making their meters unusable until they complete the upgrade.
