GameChange Solar has secured a 1.25 GW contract to supply its state-of-the-art Genius Tracker™ 1P Single Row tracking systems to the Abydos Solar PV Plant Phase II. The groundbreaking project, located in Egypt’s Aswan Governorate, is being developed by AMEA Power and constructed by China Energy Engineering Corporation’s Zhejiang Thermal Power Construction (CEEC-ZTPC).
The Abydos project is poised to be one of the largest integrated solar and storage facilities in Africa. The 1 GWac solar photovoltaic (PV) component will be paired with a 600 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), reinforcing Egypt’s grid stability while maximizing clean energy availability. GameChange’s contribution in the form of advanced tracking technology is expected to significantly enhance solar efficiency and output.
A Giant Leap for Renewable Energy in Egypt
Spanning 20 square kilometers in Egypt’s sun-rich southern region, the Abydos Phase II Solar Plant will generate an estimated 3,000 GWh of electricity annually. This output will be enough to meet the electricity needs of over 500,000 households, while slashing more than 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. The project commissioning is scheduled for May 2026, setting the stage for Egypt’s transition to large-scale, decarbonized electricity production.
Egypt has been aggressively expanding its solar and wind power portfolio under its Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy 2035, which aims to source 42% of electricity from renewables by 2035. With the backing of international developers, contractors, and suppliers like GameChange Solar, Egypt is rapidly positioning itself as a regional clean energy hub.

GameChange Solar’s technology is designed to operate in diverse climates, including arid desert conditions such as those in Egypt’s Aswan region. Its wind-resistant architecture, rapid installation design, and low maintenance requirements make it an ideal solution for utility-scale solar installations in challenging environments.
This technology not only improves solar generation efficiency by as much as 25% but also helps in reducing the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE), a key metric for the financial viability of renewable energy projects.
Global Expansion: Building Momentum Across Africa
This isn’t GameChange Solar’s first foray into Africa. In April 2025, the U.S.-based company inked a significant deal to supply Genius Tracker systems for four large-scale solar projects totaling over 500 MW across Southern Africa. These projects are strategically aligned to power critical mining operations and fortify energy diversification in countries historically reliant on fossil fuels and unstable grids.
By securing these back-to-back deals, GameChange is not just expanding its footprint but also demonstrating the central role of solar tracking in improving renewable energy performance across diverse terrains. Its technologies are gaining recognition in regions like Africa, where reliable, cost-effective energy is critical for economic development and environmental sustainability.

The Abydos project illustrates the importance of international collaboration in advancing Africa’s energy transition. AMEA Power, headquartered in the UAE, has been instrumental in financing and developing renewable infrastructure across Africa and the Middle East. The firm has several projects in Egypt, Togo, Burkina Faso, and Jordan, making it a leading force in emerging market energy development.
CEEC-ZTPC, the Chinese construction giant overseeing the engineering and implementation, brings technical and logistical expertise to manage projects of this scale in remote and harsh regions. Together with GameChange Solar’s high-performance equipment, these entities represent a robust supply chain bridging financing, engineering, and innovation.
Egypt’s Renewable Energy Trajectory
Egypt has made headlines in recent years with its increasing embrace of clean energy. From the massive Benban Solar Park, once the largest in the world, to the upcoming green hydrogen and wind initiatives, Egypt is transforming its energy mix. The country’s location gives it one of the highest solar irradiance levels globally, making solar a natural cornerstone of its climate strategy.
The addition of battery storage in the Abydos project also marks a shift towards dispatchable renewable energy, allowing solar power to be stored and released during peak demand or at night.
