Türkiye, Somalia Partner to Explore Offshore Hydrocarbons

Türkiye has recently entered into an important partnership with Somalia to explore and develop offshore hydrocarbon resources, a step that aims to boost Somalia’s energy sector and spur economic growth in a country that has faced instability.

This collaboration is seen as a journey to strengthen both nations, offering new paths to prosperity.

Türkiye’s support for Somalia started back in 2011 when President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made a groundbreaking visit, launching extensive cooperation between the two countries.

Since then, Türkiye has invested in sectors like education, health, and infrastructure and provided humanitarian aid. This new hydrocarbon agreement builds on these efforts, reinforcing the close ties between Türkiye and Somalia.

On March 7, 2024, Türkiye and Somalia signed a broad agreement to explore and produce hydrocarbons. Formalized in Istanbul by Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar and Somali Petroleum Minister Abdirizak Omar Mohamed, the deal grants the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) permission to carry out exploration in three offshore blocks designated for Türkiye.

Each block covers about 5,000 square kilometers, and initial seismic surveys by the research vessel Oruç Reis, supported by other ships, are expected to take around two months.

This exploration is expected to bring economic benefits to Somalia. One of the main benefits is job creation; Turkish companies will need local labor, which can help reduce unemployment.
